The Los Angeles Lakers might switch some things around this offseason, especially as it pertains to their point guard spot. D’Angelo Russell is very clearly starting to show what his limitations are, and he might not be the best player for a team eyeing a championship. Chris Paul, on the other hand, might be.
Paul has had his own series of postseason failures, but he can still control an offense and make plays on both ends. If LeBron James wants to bring some banana boat shenanigans over to Los Angeles, the Phoenix Suns finally made it a feasible option.
The Suns waived Paul in a move that helped them get some extra cap space. One unintended side effect of this transaction was the fact that it opened up a pathway for Paul to come over to the Lakers without any sort of trade shenanigans that could make things complicated.
Will Chris Paul join the Los Angeles Lakers?
Paul averaged 13.8 points and 8.9 assists per game last season, and he is just one year removed from leading the entire league in assists per game with 10.8 per contest. He can still take a team like the Lakers to the postseason, even if he has had his shortcomings in May.
Paul’s camp has reportedly leaked that he is intending to play for a few more seasons with a contending team, so there is a good chance that he will only commit to a team with a three-year plan that can help them contend. LA still has LeBron, and they will always contend with him.
Paul just needs to get Anthony Davis some good looks in the post while doing his best to accentuate what James brings to the table. After what he has gone through in his career, he will likely be more than willing to adapt to that role to chase a ring.
Paul needs a ring, LeBron needs one more of his friends to come to town, and the Lakers need a point guard. The stars seem to be aligning.
