3 stars the Lakers should target to build around Anthony Davis
Karl-Anthony Towns could build his legacy with the Lakers
Though Minnesota’s homegrown star Karl-Anthony Towns recently signed a four-year, $234.5 million extension, the T-Wolves are reportedly willing to field offers for the 28-year-old center.
Minnesota purportedly is seeking a high return for KAT, making his addition to Los Angeles unlikely for this coming season. The Lakers do not have the level of assets needed to trade for Anthony-Towns right now, but following James’ departure, a trade package can be built.
Over his career, the former Kentucky Wildcat has shot 39.5 percent from 3-point range on 4.2 attempts per game. Alongside Anthony Davis, the Lakers would have arguably the best floor-spacing frontcourt across the league.
Offensively, Karl Anthony-Towns has consistently been one of the best centers in the NBA, earning three All-Star appearances and two All-NBA selections.
Setting KAT next to AD would give Anthony-Towns his best teammate yet. Though the former first-overall pick has struggled to achieve much postseason success, his fate may change with the Lakers.
Though he struggles on the defensive end, trusting Anthony Davis as the anchor and leader on both ends of the court could alleviate some of the struggles KAT has faced thus far. While the All-Star center’s talent is undeniable, his ability to lead a team has often been in question as the Timberwolves have consistently failed in the Playoffs. In LA, Anthony-Towns would be the second option, giving him a new role and opportunity for redemption.
Additionally, Anthony Davis has consistently hoped to play the majority of his minutes at the four spot, but the Lakers have failed to find the right match at the five next to AD since Brook Lopez left for Milwaukee. Bringing in KAT would send a message to Davis that the Lakers want to give him the role he wants and are committed to his long-term happiness in LA.
The future of the Lakers will be in good hands with the young core and Anthony Davis as the leader. Year after year, Davis is in conversations for the best two-way big man in the Association. In order to continue making history, the Lakers will need to make the most of Davis’ prime.
Any of these three stars would be a great centerpiece next to the Brow.
