LeBron James is regularly regarded as one of the best basketball players in history and has always been a formidable opponent. While he is past his prime, LeBron still has plenty in the gas tank and could have one more elite regular-season run in him.

As we get ready for the upcoming 2023-2024 season, here are three crucial conditions that must be met for LeBron James to once again be selected as an MVP finalist.

What LeBron James must do to be an MVP finalist again:

1. LeBron James must play at least 66 games

In a typical NBA season, an MVP candidate is expected to participate in at least 70 to 75 of the team’s 82 regular-season games, showing consistent play and impact throughout the campaign to support their bid for the prestigious award. In LeBron’s case, due to his injury history, age, and load management, he needs to play at least 66 games.

LeBron James knows that consistency and commitment are key to team success. Playing 66 games showcases his leadership and durability, making him a strong MVP contender. Careful load management helps him make a significant impact in his 21st NBA season.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a prime example, who played 72 games in the 2018-19 season and led the Milwaukee Bucks to a league-best record of 60 victories. He averaged 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game, earning him the MVP award.

Joel Embiid played exactly 66 games last season in his MVP-winning year, setting the baseline for LeBron to achieve.

If LeBron wants to accomplish this, he needs to address his minute restrictions. However, balancing his well-being with on-court influence is a delicate challenge for him and Lake Show. Ultimately, the Lakers should manage his minutes more so he can stay fresh and play more games, rather than increasing his minutes and him playing fewer games.

2. LeBron James must fight statistical regression

To be an MVP contender, LeBron James should aim for well-rounded statistics: 26-28 points, 7-9 rebounds, and 7-9 assists per game. Shooting efficiency is crucial, with field goal percentages over 50% and three-point percentages around 35% or better.

Defensive stats like 1-1.5 steals and 0.5-1 blocks per game show his two-way prowess. Team success and LeBron’s consistent availability are key factors.

3. The Lakers must live up to the hype

Team success is a factor to consider when determining the MVP. It shows how much a player’s performance can contribute to their team’s success and how much of an impact they have on the game. Although the Western Conference is more highly competitive than ever, it will be a test for LeBron and the Lake Show to be consistent and end up at least the four-seed or higher.

The four-seed in the West last season won 45 games, which is only two more than the Lakers won last season. Embiid’s 76ers won 54 games. LeBron and the Lakers will likely have to be around the 50-win mark.

Of course, individual statistics are also a key consideration, as well as leadership, offensive and defensive prowess, and consistency throughout the season. All of these factors combined help to determine who is truly deserving of the MVP award.

Can LeBron James accomplish these things in year 21?

LeBron James can accomplish these things but it will take buy-in and support from the Lakers. The team must resist the urge to overwork James, as that opens the door for the entire house of cards to fall.

If LeBron can accomplish these things, it can lessen the toll of a demanding NBA season. Furthermore, LeBron’s ability to play 66 games, counteract statistical regression, and fulfill the Lakers’ collective potential can stem from his conditioning, rigorous training regimen, and proactive load management strategies. Moreover, the Lake Show’s dynamic roster and coaching staff will lessen the burden on LeBron in a big way and elevate the team’s performance.

If these things are aligned, LeBron’s durability, rest, and lessened workload could help boost the Lakers’ chances to compete in the Western Conference and beyond.

Until then, look out for LeBron James to have an impactful season in year 21 for Lake Show.
