The Los Angeles Lakers could not start the 2023-24 season with a win as the team fell to the Denver Nuggets on Opening Night. While there were several great stretches of basketball, the Lake Show ultimately proved that it still is not on the Nuggets’ level.

The best stretches of basketball in this game involved Anthony Davis, who was absolutely dominant in the first half against Denver. However, the lows were much lower than the highs as AD was a complete no-show in the second half.

Davis did not score a single point in the second half, going 0-6 from the field in the process. Any star that plays like this is going to get ridiculed but that is only intensified considering this was a nationally televised game.

Not only that, but Davis was very clear before the season that he heard the Nuggets’ trash talk loud and clear and was motivated to make them pay for it. You cannot talk like that and then go out and drop a goose egg in the second half. Davis has rightfully been roasted on social media, with Bill Simmons leading the way.

Anthony Davis deserves to be roasted after a sad second half for the Lakers

Anthony Davis has to be better. Plain and simple. This is a guy who is meant to be the new leader of the team and is someone who Lakers fans have said is top 10 in the NBA. While everyone has an off night, Davis does not get the benefit of the doubt and can’t have this kind of off night if he is truly top 10.

The Nuggets are the team that the Lakers have to get through to reach the NBA Finals this season. Davis dropped the ball in several of the Western Conference Finals games last season and after doing so again, fans have every right to be worried if it is a trend. No excuses. Davis simply has to be better.

Thankfully, this is just the first of 82 regular-season games and was not a crucial playoff game in May. But that does not change the fact that is was a horrible start for Davis. He is better than this (fans saw that in the first half!) and if he is truly going to lead the team he cannot turn in these games against other Western Conference contenders.

Denver seemingly didn’t give AD enough motivation to show up for an entire game on Opening Night. Hopefully, this showing can give him that extra bit of motivation.

Next. 22 players the Lakers gave up on too early. dark
