Alternate angle of Luka Doncic's injury reaction will send Lakers fans over the edge

Luka wears his emotions on his sleeve... for better or worse.

The basketball world has stopped spinning for Los Angeles Lakers fans. In the middle of the worst loss of the season, the Lakers lost something much more impactful: Luka Doncic. Doncic pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury in the second half and promptly left the game.

Los Angeles' title hopes, which already took a hit considering how poorly the team played against the Thunder, start and stop with Doncic. There's no way around it. If Luka isn't playing in the NBA Playoffs, the Lakers have no chance. They could win a series. Maybe two. But there's no Larry O'Brien trophy without Luka.

Doncic has 16 days until the NBA Playoffs start and in a perfect world, it's a grade I strain that needs just two weeks to heal. While it's impossible to diagnose the injury by watching from a screen, it is fair to be legitimately worried by Doncic's reaction to the injury in this alternate angle:

Luka Doncic's injury reaction is nightmare fuel for Lakers fans

It's important to note that Luka is walking in the clip and could still do so under his own power. That is at least a small wrinkle of optimism in what is otherwise an awful situation for the Lakers.

The not-so-optimistic point of view is the fact that professional athletes know their bodies better than anyone else on the globe. When an athlete has a visceral reaction to an injury like this, it's usually not a precursor to good news.

Luka knows what is at stake. He knows how important he is to the Lakers and that the team cannot reach its ultimate goal without him healthy for the NBA Playoffs. And while it's a minor point, he also knows what this injury does for his MVP award chances.

Thursday was Doncic's 64th game of the 2025-26 regular season. He is one game away from qualifying for the MVP award, in which he was almost undoubtedly going to be a finalist, and the All-NBA Teams, in which he was a lock for the First Team.

This injury takes that all away. If Doncic misses the regular season, he cannot qualify for either award because of the league's archaic 65-game rule.

Ultimately, the personal awards pale in comparison to what this injury could do for the Lakers' title hopes and Luka himself would say that. It's just a shame the level at which this one injury impacts both Luka personally and the team as a whole.

Doncic is someone who always wears his emotions on his sleeve and unfortunately in this case, it does nothing to remedy Lakers fans' concerns. It's hard not to spiral and expect the worst-case scenario given how Luka himself reacted to the injury.

But hey, that's basketball. If winning a championship were easy, then every team would do it. All Lakers fans can do now is cross their fingers and hope the injury isn't as serious as Doncic's reaction made it seem. Because if it is, well, that's all she wrote.
