Bronny James was a developmental project from the moment he was selected with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. His latest opportunity with the main team showcased what the Los Angeles Lakers were hoping to get from the young guard.
Yes, there are still flaws that need to be improved with his shooting and quick read decision-making, but getting an opportunity to see him share the court with the Lakers' main guys in the 137-130 win over the Indiana Pacers highlighted promise. His strengths were on full display.
In the 13 minutes he played (second most off the Lakers' bench), Bronny finished with four points, two steals, one block, one assist, and one rebound. Dig deep enough and that stat line hints at one of those strengths: his defense. James was effective in bringing energy, and matching up against different types of challenges, holding his ground pretty well.
The athleticism of Bronny was another thing shining all throughout the night. Overall, unlike some previous moments in his development, there was no extended feeling of watching him and thinking that James did not belong on that NBA floor.
Patience continues to be key with Lakers' development of Bronny James
Bronny said: "Feels good [to] just go out there and play my game, be confident in myself. That's what I always wanted to do, and that's what I've been doing in the G. It's been paying off.”
James has enjoyed almost two full seasons of development with the South Bay Lakers. Considering the time that was lost during his college days due to his cardiac arrest, the opportunity to grow as player is invaluable for an athlete of his caliber who needs the fine-tuning at this young age.
In a bolder assessment, one could argue that James' defense is there. He's not the perfect defender, but Bronny's main selling point to consistently get him on an NBA floor is showing up how it should on film. Staying aggressive but disciplined, without fouling, is the next step.
The real leap the Lakers are craving is on offense. James was a lot more calm and cool in his last matchup. That much was encouraging. Bronny has also been delivering the type of results needed of him in the G League. Consistency and opportunity will be crucial for his growth.
For a team hoping to get as deep into the playoffs as they can, there is just no reason for James to be a last-minute insertion into their plans. A full offseason and training camp to impress JJ Redick before 2026-27 could get Bronny his fair shake next season.
Developing complimentary young players to your main core is an incredibly underrated part of building a championship team. Writing off James as one of those players would be unwise for now.
