Cameron Carr is going to be capable of shooting the lights out of the basketball. There is a great deal of confidence in that sentiment for anyone watching the Los Angeles Lakers rookie play summer league basketball. What is needed for him to earn a role from day one is defense.

Carr has the athletic tools to be an impactful defender. He's got great wingspan for his size and is quick enough to be a disruptive player on that end, with the right focus. The Lakers wing made sure every reporter knew he was indeed locked in on being that type of two-way contributor for the team ahead of Los Angeles' first game at the Las Vegas Summer League.

"Be consistent. Show that I'm not a lapse on defense, and just every time that they rely on me defensively, just step up and get the job done. ... It's just trying to be ahead of everybody, trying to be ahead of the play."

The commitment to becoming a two-way player at the NBA level is exactly the type of thing that will help make Carr's case for immediate minutes in October. The Lakers should have playing time for him if this current roster is close to its final form. His dedication to both ends can get him on the floor.

Cameron Carr's two-way commitment should make him playable from day one for the Lakers

The Lakers need two-way guys around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Letting go of guys like Luke Kennard, who tilt more significantly to one end than the other, was a strong indicator of the priorities in Los Angeles for next season.

Between his slashing ability and stellar shooting, Carr should be an ideal offensive fit around Doncic and Reaves. If the rookie wing is adept at creating buckets now, his job will only be easier when he sees the type of openings that should come in lineups with his star players.

Sharing the floor with Luka and Austin will require to fill the defensive roles adequately around them. For example, if Carr can show up as a solid point of attack defender, that will make it easy to pair him up with Doncic and Reaves, because neither of them excel in that department.

To his credit, the former Baylor Bear is saying and doing everything right. Carr has talked about his desire to be a sponge, learn quickly, and not play like a rookie. That is the perfect attitude.

Carr got three seasons at the NCAA level. That allowed him to grow his game. Granted, with him it looked more like an explosion onto the scene as soon as he showed up Baylor for his junior season.

The Lakers offer the opportunity to continue that growth. Everything Carr is showing indicates a player who is ready to maximize his new environment and earn a spot in JJ Redick's rotation from the jump.
