It was one of those games on Tuesday night that make LeBron James feel timeless. In the year 2026, the Los Angeles Lakers star delivered the type of efficient offensive performance that was reminiscent of the prime years in his career. Sometimes, it just needs to be appreciated.
James poured in 30 points, shooting 13-of-14 from the field, during the Lakers' competitive 124-116 win over the Houston Rockets. While LeBron is no longer flying with his head above the rim, those buckets did include a few jaw-dropping dunks for someone who is 41 years old. All of that evoked a reaction from Kevin Durant in the postgame that everyone could relate to.
"I think he could play until he's 45 years old. I don't know if he wants to be around that long, but I think he could play for another four to five more years. ... When you love the game as much as he does, you'll do anything to stay locked in and stay on top of your game. He's very inspiring as a human being."
James has been asked to dial it back in his role as the third star for the Lakers. Sometimes, though, when you're on, you're on. LeBron came out with 18 first-half points, shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the field, and there was an immediate feeling of this being one of those nights for him.
LeBron James is predictably continuing to defy the aging process
Durant sounded like a fan in the back end of his statement. That is not meant as a slight in any way to the Rockets star either. It is difficult to watch someone do what James has done and not catch yourself in awe of it every once in a while.
The all-time great might not be the best in the world anymore, or even a top-10 player, but there is still an absurdity to how LeBron continues to age gracefully. On nights like Tuesday against the Rockets, James can find room to squeeze in an offering of turning back the clock.
On the whole of this season, the NBA's all-time leading scorer has remained productive. James is averaging 21.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 1.1 steals per game. There is a good chance those numbers look better, too, without the sciatica injury slowing him down at the start of the year.
After winning seven in a row, and 10 of their last 11, the Lakers are playing like a team who are ready to force some uncomfortable conversations about what this postseason could bring. Any deep playoff run will need nights like this one where James is tapped in to his foutain of youth.
