Lakers can breathe easy after new Giannis Antetokounmpo report eases doomsday fears

There is no immediate indication the Oklahoma City Thunder want to make a seismic shake-up to the NBA.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are a tough team to beat. The Los Angeles Lakers found that out on a personal level in the 2026 NBA Playoffs after getting swept by last year's champs. However, where the Lakers failed, the San Antonio Spurs succeeded.

After the Thunder lost to the Spurs in seven games during the Western Conference Finals, many immediately could not help but wonder about the Giannis Antetokounmpo-sized elephant in the room. Speculation continues about where the Greek Freak will play next after an expected exit from the Milwaukee Bucks this summer. Marc Stein reported it will not be in Oklahoma City.

"Giannis to the Thunder? In consulting with various rival executives in the wake of Oklahoma City's Game 7 loss at home ... , I've yet to encounter any who strongly believe that Sam Presti would pursue such a dramatic move in response to the defending champions' dethroning."

Adding to that, Stein rightfully pointed out just how loaded and capable the Thunder are in terms of their trade assets. That makes a move of this magnitude child's play for them. Thankfully for the Lakers and the rest of the NBA, there will not be an overreaction to this year's result.

Giannis Antetokounmpo in OKC is the last thing 28 other franchise would have wanted

Given how influential the injuries of Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell were viewed in relation to the outcome of the Western Conference Finals, Stein added that a 'drastic response' like trading for Antetokounmpo would be shocking. That is merciful news for many.

If the Bucks are headed for a rebuild post-Giannis, their interest in where Antetokounmpo ends up simply lies with getting the best possible trade return. The Thunder could certainly offer that. That would have left those two as the only teams truly happy with the potential move.

Adding a top-five player in the world to an already loaded Thunder roster would have created a nightmare opponent for the league. In particular, teams in the Western Conference, like the Lakers, would face a brutal obstacle in the NBA Playoffs.

Even the Spurs, who just eliminated the Thunder, would be given no room to truly feel comfortable. Antetokounmpo would be a direct response to the Victor Wembanyama problem brewing in the West. Giannis is one of the few who has the size, athleticism, physicality, and ability to challenge Wemby.

Even for the Eastern Conference teams, they would have to march through the postseason knowing that a team boasting two top-five players and a stacked supporting cast could be waiting for them in the NBA Finals. Yikes.

For a Lakers team looking to win now in the Luka Doncic era, not having that type of team dissuading an all-in push helps. Breaking through in the West is already an uphill battle. Not adding a potential superteam to the mix is certainly cause for some quiet celebration.
