Lakers have far more to offer Jalen Duren than the Kings in sign-and-trade talks

The Kings and Lakers will soon negotiate with Jalen Duren. He should choose the Lakers without hesitation.

NBA insider Chris Haynes sent the basketball world into a frenzy with a report that Jalen Duren will be pursuing a sign-and-trade opportunity with the Sacramento Kings. Shortly thereafter, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that the Los Angeles Lakers will have a call with Duren on Tuesday, June 30 to discuss a potential sign-and-trade, as well.

Though the Kings have a promising young point guard in Darius Acuff Jr., Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the epitome of why Duren should choose the Lakers without a second thought.

Duren produced a sensational 2025-26 regular season that led many to believe that superstardom was in his future. At just 22 years of age, he averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.8 offensive boards, 2.0 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 0.8 steals on 65.0 percent shooting from the field.

Unfortunately, Duren averaged just 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game on 51.4 percent shooting during the playoffs in a 14-game run that saw him score no more than 15 points in a single outing.

Thankfully, the Lakers are perfectly suited to bring the best out of Duren. Doncic and Reaves not only form a top-tier backcourt, but have the specific skill sets to accentuate his strengths and simplify the game for him on the offensive end of the floor.

While Sacramento may be able to offer Duren a big contract and a promising rookie point guard, Los Angeles can provide him with ready-made resources to make the leap to an even higher level.

Lakers have far more to offer Jalen Duren than the Kings

Duren finished the 2025-26 regular season ranked No. 1 in the NBA in points per pick-and-roll play as the dive man at 1.45. Doncic, meanwhile, ranked No. 1 in the Association in points per game as the pick-and-roll ball handler at 11.2.

Reaves wasn't all that far behind Doncic at 7.3, which ranked No. 11 in the Association in the same statistic. In other words: Los Angeles has the resources to build the best pick-and-roll attack in the NBA.

What Los Angeles lacked in 2025-26, however, was a player like Duren who could break interior teams as the dive man. That makes the potential pairing of the most efficient pick-and-roll big in the NBA with the most productive pick-and-roll ball handler a fascinating pairing.

Adding another top-15 option in that regard just takes this group over the top as not only three talented players, but individuals with coherent and complementary skill sets.

The Kings certainly have an interesting offer to make with All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis at the heart of a potential sign-and-trade exchange. They also have a rookie point guard Duren can build with in Acuff and a number of promising young players to develop alongside him, including Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud.

If Duren's goal is to win now and continue to develop into a top-tier center, however, then he shouldn't hesitate to sign the dotted line and fill the Lakers' void at center.
