A potential free agent target for the Los Angeles Lakers could get a lot more expensive.

Hamstrings have not been kind to Jalen Williams during the 2025-26 NBA season. The Oklahoma City Thunder star exited the third quarter of his team's 120-107 win over the Phoenix Suns in Game 2, and did not return. Suddenly, this could prove to be a Los Angeles Lakers problem.

On one hand, if both the Lakers and Thunder win their first-round matchups, they would face one another in the second round of the Western Conference Playoffs. That would be the most obvious immediate impact of the injury when it comes to Los Angeles' concern.

If the Lakers had Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves back in the lineup by that point, the Thunder would face a more difficult task of competing in the series without their young star. Granted, Oklahoma City has proven they can overcome injuries in the past, particularly with relation to Williams too.

The more subtle consequences for the Lakers has to do with the upcoming free agency period. With Williams out, other players will naturally have to step up and possibly be featured in more prominent minutes for the Thunder to keep humming. That could drive up the price on potential free agent targets that Los Angeles may want to poach from Oklahoma City in the summer.

Jalen Williams injury could make Lakers' free agent targets more expensive

There are two notables names who immediately stand out as players on the Thunder who the Lakers should have some interest in ahead of 2026 free agency. That would be Isaiah Hartenstein and Luguentz Dort.

Both players have team options coming up for this summer, with Dort's valued at $18.2 million for 2026-27 and Hartenstein's coming in around $28.5 million. With Williams and Chet Holmgren due to have their rookie extensions kick in, it stands to reason that one of (or both) those first two mentioned could exit from Oklahoma City during the summer.

The Lakers would have a need for either. Hartenstein could fix up the frontcourt, and Dort would bring a valued defensive presence on the wings.

Los Angeles will undoubtedly have the money to play around with in free agency, plus an attractive destination and team situation to pitch to their potential targets. However, they will still have competition all the same.

If either Hartenstein or Dort are thrust into added minutes with Williams and thrive in the process, that could easily drive their price up ahead of free agency. For the Lakers, who want to build a well-rounded roster, controlled spending matters.

Should the Lakers really like either one of the two options here, they could be forced to overpay if the playoff spotlight shines brightly on them. In that sense, the Williams injury could become a very costly one for Los Angeles.
