The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to begin the 2026 NBA Playoffs down two of their best players. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are both sidelined by respective injuries that could force them to miss considerable time.
Through an unfortunate turn of events, however, the opportunity to overcome overwhelmingly negative odds has presented itself in light of Kevin Durant's shocking appearance on the Houston Rockets' injury report.
The Rockets acquired Durant during the 2025 offseason with a clear intention. They're an elite defensive team with developing offensive talent, which made Durant essential to overcoming opponents such as the Lakers that have veteran scoring options.
Unfortunately, Durant could miss Game 1 after being listed as questionable on the Rockets' injury report with a knee contusion.
Whoa. Durant questionable for tomorrow’s game, on the Rockets injury report with a right knee contusion.

Durant may very well push through the pain and play during Game 1, but the door has undoubtedly opened for the Lakers to capitalize on his absence and secure an unlikely win.
Kevin Durant listed as questionable for Game 1 vs. Lakers
Durant's injury follows a 2025-26 regular season during which he appeared in 78 games—at age 37, no less. During that time, he recorded averages of 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 0.9 blocks, 0.8 steals, and 2.4 three-point field goals made on .520/.413/.874 shooting.
In the process, Durant secured his 16th career All-Star Game appearance and emerged as a heavy favorite to land a 12th career All-NBA selection.
More importantly, Durant ranked No. 1 on the Rockets in points per game, No. 2 in assists per game, and No. 3 in three-point field goals made per game. He steadily emerged as Houston's go-to player on the offensive end of the floor and consistently took charge late in games.
Durant ranked No. 1 on the Rockets in points per fourth quarter, averaging 5.9 on a ridiculously efficient slash line of .530/.456/.895.
Both teams would be without their leading scorer if Kevin Durant misses Game 1
With Durant sidelined, the Lakers suddenly have a golden opportunity to steal Game 1 from a favored opponent. Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson are still tremendous players who can lead the charge for Houston, but any team would find it difficult to overcome the loss of their go-to scorer.
Los Angeles knows that as well as anyone with Doncic sidelined, but Durant's injury could go a long way toward evening the proverbial odds.
LeBron James would go up against the Rockets without having one of the few players who rivals his postseason experience playing across from him. That would by no means guarantee a Lakers win, but it would certainly simplify the matter of defending Houston.
Durant has not yet been ruled out, but the entire dynamic of the Lakers versus Rockets series has changed in the blink of an eye.
