It is not official, but if the rumors are true, the countdown on LeBron James’ time as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers has already started. That much was suggested in a recent report on The Stein Line.
NBA insider Marc Stein wrote, “The Lakers’ widely presumed preferred scenario for their future is letting James’ contract drop off their books after the 2025-26 season.”
If that holds true, it would be the clearest signal yet that the franchise is preparing to turn the page, slowly but surely. After seven straight seasons in Los Angeles, LeBron’s historic run with the Lakers may finally be approaching its conclusion.
LeBron James' historic run that has seen it all
Stein also wrote, “I believe that, as August draws near, LeBron James is going to be at his eighth Lakers training camp in a row come late September, which would represent the longest continuous stretch with one team in his Longevity GOAT career.”
That stretch has seen it all… the 2020 championship inside the NBA bubble, injury-plagued campaigns, early playoff exits, many roster shakeups, no shortage of drama, and now, the slow transition to what is next. What is next for the Lakers is handing the reins off to their 26-year-old superstar, Luka Doncic.
The Lakers have made it clear through their roster construction and long-term vision that Doncic is the centerpiece of their future. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
Monster year of milestones is still loading for James
Before the torch is passed, LeBron still has time and, well, some motivation. This season could be one last chance to chase history, add to his legacy, and potentially lead a deep playoff push. The Lakers are retooled and younger, with Marcus Smart bringing defensive intensity and DeAndre Ayton adding size and presence in the paint
Doncic looks to be in peak condition heading into camp. Even his son, Bronny James, could carve out minutes after an encouraging Summer League performance.
This year might not be solely about rings. It could be about closure and cementing final milestones.
“LeBron James, at present, is tied with Vince Carter in terms of seasonal longevity at 22 seasons… Fifty more regular-season games will put James at 1,612 for his career and nudge him past Robert Parish for the NBA's all-time record,” Stein noted.
All signs suggest those milestones will happen in a Lakers jersey. Beyond that, everything is up in the air. This season may be the last chance to appreciate James repping the purple and gold in real time.
