The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a valuation of $12 billion. For the second time in two years, the Lakers are welcoming new faces to their ownership group. And with Iger’s presence could come Chris Paul. Ramona Shelburne of ESPN reported as much during a recent podcast appearance.
“Chris Paul is a very good friend of Bob Iger's,” Shelburne said. “He just recently retired, so he's available. I know he has some production company designs that he's done. I think he's got the world as his oyster, he can do whatever he wants, but if I'm Bob Iger, I think one of my first calls is to Chris Paul and asking how he would like to be involved, if he would like to be involved, etc. But I certainly think that's a name to watch as we go forward here.”
Paul joining the Lakers in any capacity would probably be good for the future of the organization and the development of Luka Doncic as a point guard.
Bob Iger could bring Chris Paul to Lakers
As of February of this year, Paul is retired from the NBA. So, if he were to join the Lakers following Iger’s purchase of the team, he wouldn’t be a player.
The 41-year-old point guard could maybe play some NBA minutes still, but there are probably a lot of better options for teams around the league to roll with at this point.
That said, bringing Paul into the fold in some regard could be a great idea for the Lakers. His basketball IQ would be a perfect addition in a ton of different areas of the organization.
Perhaps Iger would want to add Paul to the front office. Having his mind to help build future Lakers teams around Doncic would be nice for Rob Pelinka. It’s always good to have a former player in the mix.
Maybe there’s a world in which Paul would join the coaching staff. He and JJ Redick played with each other on the LA Clippers when they were in the NBA, so there has to be a relationship there.
But maybe Iger would just want to bring Paul on board as a special advisor. He could help the coaching staff when needed and the front office when needed. Maybe he could even scout a little bit.
No matter what capacity Paul would join the organization in, it feels like it could be a good fit. Paul is one of the smartest point guards in NBA history, and having someone like that around seems like an ideal situation.
