Lakers should be unfazed by Rich Paul’s inevitable LeBron media campaign

Rich Paul claims 10+ teams are interested in LeBron James. That changes nothing for the Lakers.

The inevitable has officially arrived. Rich Paul’s rise to sports media prominence has led to an appearance during which he advocated for his client, LeBron James, and made comments that imply the Los Angeles Lakers could lose him.

In other words: Paul did exactly what an agent is supposed to do. The Lakers shouldn’t even blink in response.

Paul recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show. During his appearance, he was asked about James’ future in the NBA, with retirement and free agency both seemingly on the table. His comments fit the word of the hour: Inevitable.

Paul claimed that James has received interest from more than 10 NBA teams in regard to potentially joining forces in 2026-27.

There are no shortage of reasons why the Lakers shouldn’t allow Paul’s comments to impact them in any way whatsoever.

Rich Paul says 10-12 teams have expressed interest in LeBron James

For one, James is one of the greatest players in NBA history. He’s also still one of the best in the Association today. He was an All-Star in 2025-26 and later played a starring role as the Lakers won their first playoff series since 2023.

Even at 41 years of age, it would be more surprising if James’ continued greatness yielded limited interest considering he’ll soon be an unrestricted free agent.

Furthermore, James is a four-time NBA champion who can provide invaluable leadership to any team on the cusp of a title. That expands the pool of potentially interested teams even further than those who simply covet his talent.

Compounded by the financial value his mere presence with an organization would provide, competition for his services was, once again, inevitable.

As such, the Lakers can’t let Paul’s comments change anything about their offseason plans. They still need a starting center, a wing defender, and improved three-point shooting, and James’ free agency has positioned them to aggressively pursue creative solutions.

Los Angeles must seriously consider re-signing James, but they should still proceed as though nothing has changed in light of Paul’s comments. Truthfully, nothing has.
