What is the best-case scenario for where Giannis Antetokounmpo ends up next season? Many Los Angeles Lakers fans would argue it would be for him to start 2026-27 in purple and gold. If that is the case, the second-best situation would be Giannis staying over in the Eastern Conference.

The Lakers have been largely absent from the Antetokounmpo rumor mill updates of late, implying that in the immediate future there is no real momentum about Giannis moving to Los Angeles. Luckily for them, they can gain comfort from the fact that other Western Conference teams are not faring any better.

Jake Fischer dropped his latest rumor mill round-up on Thursday. The core focus of trade chatter in this one was Giannis. Fischer highlighted the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers as the main teams in 'active trade pursuit' of Antetokounmpo. The NBA insider added the suggestion of not ruling out the Boston Celtics in the sweepstakes either.

Other suitors that had been linked to Giannis in the past like the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors were thought to be quickly fading from the race. There was even skepticism about how real the Blazers' pursuit was. It all sure sounded like the main teams chasing Antetokounmpo were in the East.

Growing intel on Giannis keeps pointing to his next team being in the East

Fischer quickly moved to pour cold water on any fiery rumors surrounding Giannis joining the Timberwolves or Warriors. Both suitors had been absent from the current negotiations, according to the NBA insider.

"Minnesota and Golden State were both prominent Antetokounmpo suitors in February when the Bucks briefly invited trade interest in their Face of the Franchise, but sources say neither team has factored into the Bucks' recent trade talks."

That leaves both of them temporarily crossed off. So, what about the Blazers? They were active in talks according to Fischer. Why are their chances of landing Antetokounmpo overstated? Well, there is good reason for that.

The NBA insider explained there was skepticism about whether Antetokounmpo would sign a contract extension in Portland. Remember, Giannis is essentially operating as a one-year rental considering his player option for the 2027-28 season.

Understandably so, if the Blazers do not believe they can keep him for the long haul, why would they give up serious assets to acquire him? Fischer thought concerns of that nature would 'inevitably dissuade' Portland from pulling the trigger on a Giannis trade as a result.

If everything said there is taken at face value, the Heat and Celtics stand out as the main horses in the race. Granted, rumors are always fickle and things could change rapidly. As things currently stand, though, the Lakers' path out of the Western Conference does not project to include Giannis in it.
