The reasons for the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James to split are shrinking.

At present, there is a feeling of gratitude in Hollywood toward LeBron James. The Los Angeles Lakers are without their top two stars in Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Despite that, they do not come across as defeated while James is still around and available.

In a first-round matchup that would be completely doomed without him, LeBron provides the ultimate insurance policy to the Lakers' top-two stars. It's the type of stuff that would have one believe Los Angeles and James are best off sticking with each other until the day of his retirement.

Despite that, the latest rumor mill report from Marc Stein does not suggest things are necessarily trending in that direction for the two sides. James leaving Los Angeles is still very much so on the table for this offseason.

"The Lakers' LeBron James. The Clippers' Kawhi Leonard. And, of course, Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo. ... There is a growing anticipation in numerous front offices, league sources say, that two or even all three of the above marquee names could land with new teams next season."

LeBron James' exit remains a very real possibility for the Lakers

Lakers fans may have to wrestle with the idea of this being James' last postseason in Los Angeles if the estimations about all three of those names being on the move are correct. However, if there is one holdout, it would be fair to believe LeBron is the one who stays put with his current team.

If somehow, some way, Antetokounmpo is still with the Milwaukee Bucks after this offseason, considering the endless amounts of trade rumors with him at the forefront, NBA fans will collectively be bashing their heads against the nearest wall. Giannis needs to relocate.

Leonard, meanwhile, could face punishment after the league finally makes their decision on what to do with the scandal that surrounded the Los Angeles Clippers late in the 2025 offseason. The popular suggestions has been that Kawhi's contract being voided.

Both of those situations pretty much guarantee the inevitable feeling of an exit looming. James is different.

A scorching-hot March showcased that LeBron works just fine as a third star behind Doncic and Reaves. The only real hold-up would be his contract situation.

James taking a pay cut would ensure the Lakers have more than enough reason to want him back. It would allow them the means to properly fill out the roster around him, Doncic, and Reaves. That discounted rate would still likely be better than what most contenders could offer him in the summer.

Stein did emphasize two or three when it comes to those stars and potential relocation plans. One would imagine the hesitation is inspired by James, given everything we know.
