Amid several rumors that LeBron James could be leaving the Lakers ahead of free agency, the official word is out, and it brings an end to an eight-year era. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that LeBron will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers to move on without him.
The immediate assumption here is LeBron will be teaming up wth Steph Curry and company in Golden State, but that’s not my focus. As great as the LeBron era was, bringing a championship in the 2020 season, the time to start something new was clear. The Lakers have now been blessed with that opportunity.
Obviously, Rob Pelinka and the front office could have moved on from LeBron even if he had an interest in re-signing with the Lakers. However, it’s important to understand how difficult it is, from a financial perspective, for an organization to move on from arguably the greatest player ever in what will likely be his final season.
With LeBron now out of LA, the offseason has gotten way more intriguing and opened the door for Pelinka to have a real chance to build a title contender around Luka Doncic.
LeBron leaving allows the Lakers to finally start the Luka era
Again, I want to reiterate that LeBron is an exceptional player even at this stage of his career—he is still a top-25 player and can help a team contend in the Western Conference. That being said, with him leaving, the Lakers now have the means to really fill out their roster and address their numerous holes.
Reports have suggested LeBron isn’t worried about his salary and is focused on his happiness for the 2026-27 season. But in my mind, that may not have been an option for LA, considering he didn’t take a pay cut the last several chances he had with the Lakers.
Pelinka already has his one-two punch in Luka and Austin Reaves. They don’t need a third star. What they do need is depth, 3-and-D wings, and some high-quality center play.
We’ve seen before that Luka needs a secondary scorer and role players. With that, he can lead a team to the NBA Finals. In 2024, with Dallas, he had Kyrie Irving as his Robin, and the rest of the roster was filled with Alfreds and Commissioner Gordons that allowed him to be Batman.
LeBron's leaving lets Luka finally be Batman, like when Bruce Wayne passed the mantle onto Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond.
While some fans may be sad to see LeBron go, it’s truly a blessing for the Lakers and their future with Doncic. LA now finally has the means to go all in on the Luka era and build a team that truly revolves around him.
