LeBron James' future is not just a Lakers-Cavaliers choice anymore

All the conversations surrounding what happens with LeBron James for next season have involved three general options: retire, take a pay cut and stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, or get back to the Cleveland Cavaliers by any means necessary. So, what is behind secret fourth option?

That would be the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have quietly hovered in the background as a possibility for James, but there have never been any monumental waves of momentum in that direction. Marc Stein gave those rumors some real weight in his latest round-up of murmurings.

Stein wrote, "The Warriors are likewise routinely described by rival teams as one of the few credible destinations for LeBron James' 24th NBA campaign if James and the Lakers indeed part ways after eight seasons together. 'It has some legs,' one league source of the LeBron link to the Warriors."

The idea of seeing James paired up with Stephen Curry has been a dream duo that fans have shamelessly enjoyed thinking about over recent years. Even with both stars having aged, there could still be excitement in seeing them come together. It just remains a long shot all the same.

LeBron James going to the Warriors has fluctuating levels of viability

The optics of Curry and James teaming up have always been just as weird as they are intriguing.

On one hand, the playing styles of the two future Hall of Famers should mesh seamlessly. That was something everyone got to enjoy briefly at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At this point, both players are far enough removed from the peak of their powers that simply having those two would not be enough for a championship contender.

That last part has always been the main selling point of why the pair should join forces. After competing head-to-head for multiple championships, Curry and James could get one together. A soon-to-be 39-year-old former Splash Bro and a rapidly-aging G.O.A.T. would need ample support.

Could the Warriors give them that? Perhaps. However, Mike Dunleavy Jr.'s track record of filling out the team around Curry has been suspect in recent years.

Plus, for James, who is simply padding his all-time resume at this stage, going to the Bay Area and into Steph's home for a title is a move that does not age gracefully after the nuance and details fade with time. That may be a part of the reasoning as to why the union has not happened yet.

James did say back in 2022 that playing with Curry would be on his list of desirables for a team-up. Does it still make sense in 2026? Or, does a LeBron-Warriors jersey look like Michael Jordan's threads with the Washington Wizards or Hakeem Olajuwon's Toronto Raptors uniform 20 years from now?

Do the Warriors even provide a clearer path to a title than the Lakers anymore? One could easily argue the answer to that is no.

Golden State will provide an alternate path to some of the more obvious options that James has to choose from. Whether it is one truly worth exploring for LeBron is not all too clear.
