There are a ton of similarities between LeBron James and Luka Doncic. That serves as a major reason why many want to see the duo broken up, arguing there is too much overlap in their games. However, it can also be a driving factor as to how Doncic can learn from James in the long run.
Not to minimize someone's struggle, but whatever scrutiny Luka has faced this season pales in comparison to the immense pressure LeBron had to operate under as a player dubbed "The Chosen One" straight out of high school. His shortcomings and failures were all put under a microscope.
However, it was those exact moments that James talked about when it comes to becoming the player who he is today. That would be a man who needs little to no introduction. LeBron is basketball royalty. King James was born from the troubling times. It was something the all-time great opened up about on the latest episode of his podcast.
"The most ultimate team success is a championship," James said. "So, if I'm not completely locked in and completely determined on that as well, then I feel like I was failing myself too."
LeBron James learned from his failures, and Luka Doncic can too
James discussed that during his first seven years in Cleveland, a lot of the personal goals like All-Star appearances, MVPs, etc. were all checked off. The lack of championship weighed heavily. That led him to always look for ways he could be better.
For James, part of that journey was taking off to South Beach. At some point, LeBron needed to admit his part of the equation was being done well. The team and franchise around him were failing in their roles. When the Miami Heat also stumbled in their first year, James evolved as a player yet again.
That all eventually allowed LeBron to become the player who dominated the sport for a longer duration than many thought possible. While no one is projecting that type of longevity for Doncic, the lesson here comes in the first part.
James talked about winning at every level of his basketball journey before the NBA. LeBron needed to add 'the highest level' to that list.
Doncic has similarly been a winner. The former EuroLeague MVP won the second-best basketball league on the planet with Real Madrid while he was only a teenager. Now, just like LeBron, all that is left would be the break through in the NBA.
Luka has the All-NBA First Teams, the All-Star selections, gaudy numbers, etc. Doncic also has the experience of failure with the 2024 NBA Finals, just like James did in 2007. Build, improve, and become a champion — that is next on the agenda for the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.
With James' time in Los Angeles running short either way, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to soak up as much as you can, while you still can, for Doncic.
