The only thing more consistent than LeBron James’ greatness is his ability to break new ground. This upcoming season, James will do what no player in NBA history has ever done: enter a 23rd season and continue playing at an All-NBA level, even at age north of 40.
No one else has reached this territory. No one else has even come close.
LeBron James is entering unchartered territory in season 23
What makes this so remarkable is not just the longevity aspect of things. It is the sustained excellence.
Last season, LeBron averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. For most players, averaging stats like those would be career-high numbers. For James, they are just another chapter in a career that continues to evolve.
As Jovan Buha of Buha’s Block put it, “There are some elements here of the human body can only take so much..and LeBron might be a cyborg. He might be an alien. Literally no player has ever played in year 23. And we have never seen a guy be an All-NBA player into their early 40s.”
He is absolutely right. LeBron is creating a lane that no one else has ever driven in. He already holds more All-NBA selections with 21, than anyone in history. He is first all-time in All-Star appearances, and within 50 games of breaking Robert Parish’s record for most regular-season games played. A category that will likely fall this season, barring any injury issues.
James is also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 2023, a moment that cemented him as a statistical icon. Let’s just say that the physical accomplishments are incredibly staggering.
What is even more impressive is how he continues to adapt his game. Whether it is taking over as a point-forward, stretching the floor, or becoming the Lakers’ offensive engine when needed, LeBron is able to thrive in any situation. He is constantly evolving, and always somehow one step ahead.
While some players fade quietly into the background late in their careers, James continues to shape the narrative of the league itself. For a player who entered the league in 2003 with unprecedented hype, it is just astonishing how much of it he is still living up to, and surpassing.
Season 23 will not just be another year. It will be a milestone in basketball history. LeBron, as always, will be the one setting the standard.
