The Los Angeles Lakers just learned that they need to build around Luka Doncic immediately from the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. The Greek Freak was loyal to the Bucks for 13 seasons. He brought them a championship for the first time in 50 years. Milwaukee kept building around their superstar, and Giannis stayed. It was the moment that the Bucks fell out of contention that Antetokounmpo wanted to move on.

The pressure is on for the Lakers. They pitched Luka on upgrading their roster in the summer of 2026. The time is now. The Athletic’s Dan Wokie noted that Luka “could have a wandering eye” (subscription required) if moves aren’t made. The last thing Los Angeles wants is for this to turn into a Giannis situation.

Doncic is loyal. He wanted to spend his entire career with the Mavericks before the stunning trade sent him packing. Giannis was loyal too. He pressured the Bucks to put a contender around him, but all superstars want to win. So far, the Lakers are not holding up their end of the bargain with Luka.

The Lakers need to build a title contender roster around Luka Doncic immediately

Giannis didn’t want to leave Milwaukee. He signed multiple extensions and refused to request a trade. The Greek Freak is beloved by Bucks fans and is arguably the franchise’s GOAT. He was a homegrown player that the Bucks drafted and developed. It was the perfect story until Milwaukee was no longer a serious contender.

The Lakers don’t have the homegrown luxury with Luka. He has a say over the organization’s moves, but Los Angeles traded for him. Doncic found out the NBA is a business with that shocking deal. He has to do what is best for him.

Fans know Luka is ultracompetitive. He wants to win more than anything. If the Lakers can’t build a title-contending roster around him, the superstar has to explore his options.

The blueprint is clear. Luka plays his best with a rim-protecting center, a co-star, and 3-and-D wings. Doncic led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals with this construction when nobody thought Dallas had the talent.

The Lakers must start adding pieces. They traded for Luka at the 2025 trade deadline and have not put a long-term piece around him since. LA had two full transaction cycles and got nothing done. The time is now. Doncic is 27 years old and in the middle of his prime. The Lakers risk being like the Bucks if they don’t start adding pieces this offseason.

The Bucks got four talented players and three first-round draft picks for Giannis. They are entering a rebuild and could be out of contention for years to come. Los Angeles was in this position after Kobe Bryant retired. The iconic franchise wants to avoid that fate, so they better start building now.

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade taught the Los Angeles Lakers the valuable lesson that a franchise always needs to be building around a superstar like Luka Doncic. The time is now. The Lakers have to make moves, or their fate could rival Milwaukee’s. The pressure is certainly on, so stay tuned.
