Luka Doncic myth should be debunked by Lakers' Slovenia trip

The Los Angeles Lakers have their leader in Luka Doncic, and the superstar paying for the entire roster to go to Slovenia for a minicamp should end the wild leadership talk that has dogged him for years. Tim Hardaway Sr. blasted Luka’s leadership in 2023. Stephen A. Smith took his shots at Doncic in 2025. NBA veteran Markieff Morris even questioned Doncic’s leadership in July, but the myth should be put to bed now.

Luka led Real Madrid to a EuroLeague championship as a teenager. He led Slovenia to the Olympic semifinals in 2021. Doncic got the Mavericks to the conference finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024. Rick Carlisle was talking about Luka’s leadership in 2021. Number 77 was the best player on all these teams and their leader. The talking heads can say whatever they want, but Luka led these teams to incredible heights.

Doncic wasn’t the Lakers leader immediately after the midseason trade. He thought he would spend his entire career in Dallas. Luka was joining a new team that LeBron was already leading, but LA went as Luka did last season. They were at their best in March when Doncic was playing like the MVP. He is ready to lead this team, and the Lakers’ Slovenia trip proves he knows how to maximize the squad around him.

Luka Doncic destroyed questions about his leadership with Lakers’ Slovenia trip

Doncic and the Mavericks took an overseas trip in 2024, which improved his relationship with Kyrie Irving and led to a trip to the NBA Finals (subscription required). Luka hasn’t forgotten. He wants to show his team his home country and knows how important that bonding time can be. This is a roster that underwent a complete overhaul. Doncic knows this time together matters, and he is making it happen on his own dime.

The Lakers superstar looks to be in phenomenal shape and has a roster built around him. There are still a few pieces that don’t fit, but it is a group built for Luka to maximize. Fans know he will. Doncic is in his prime and healthy. That is a problem for the rest of the NBA.

Luka is a leader and a winner. A teenager doesn’t win EuroLeague MVP. Poor leaders don’t make two conference finals in three years and win a loaded West as the team’s best player. Not many players have ever made six first-team All-NBA appearances in their first eight years. Doncic is a historically great player and a natural leader.

There are plenty of narratives, but Luka has won at every level. He is just reaching the age where most of the all-time greats win a championship. It is easy to put him down or question things that happen, but the truth is Doncic pushes his team to heights few expect. Nobody picked Dallas to reach the NBA Finals in 2024, especially with Luka leading them. Bet against him at your own risk.

The Los Angeles Lakers are headed to Slovenia for preseason minicamp on their leader’s dime. Luka Doncic shut down the narrative that he isn’t a leader, and fans will see what number 77 can do with a team built around him this season. Nobody should be questioning his leadership, and this narrative will be forgotten by season’s end. Luka has always been a leader. No matter what any talking head has to say to the contrary.
