The Los Angeles Lakers completely remade their roster around Luka Doncic this offseason, and the superstar is “excited” about the team’s business, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike. Doncic has wanted a difference-making center from the moment he arrived in LA, and he told the franchise to bring Austin Reaves back. The Lakers got younger, added shooting, and fit better around number 77. All good things for Luka, so he should be pumped.
Fans may be worried about overpaying to land Walker Kessler or giving AR a max contract, but that doesn’t matter on the floor. Doncic finally has his rim protector and screen setter to dominate in the pick-and-roll. Reaves is ready to prove he’s an All-Star. Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton give LA depth and shooting. Those are the pieces that help the Lakers win right now. Not a draft pick in 2033 that won’t even turn into a player for seven years.
The Lakers lost significant talent. LeBron James, Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, and Jaxson Hayes all left in free agency. Rui Hachimura is still on the market, but Los Angeles doesn’t have much to offer him to return. Things will look very different, and Luka is excited about it.
Lakers fans should be just as excited as Luka Doncic
It was tough to see so many talented players depart with zero return, but the Lakers are building their roster around Luka now. The Lakers know that means having an elite rim protector, shooting, and a co-star. Los Angeles always had the number two option, but they struggled to find the other pieces. Rob Pelinka filled those holes, and Woike also reported the Lakers may not be done.
This is Luka's team. LeBron James and Anthony Davis spent years wishing for a center, and the Lakers paid a massive price to get Doncic one. Number 77 is the face of the franchise and should be catered to whenever possible.
The Lakers have a superstar in his prime. Luka led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2024 with a roster nobody thought was good enough. That squad looks a lot like this group. There was shooting, defense, and a co-star. Doncic is eager to win a championship and should be excited about what Los Angeles did to get here. Forget the draft picks and contract values. This is a roster that Luka will maximize.
Lakers fans will learn to love Kessler, Grimes, Sexton, and Mamu. They are strong fits next to Doncic and should help him lead the best offense in the NBA. It won’t be the first or last time for the two-time scoring champion.
Luka Doncic is “excited” about the Los Angeles Lakers offseason moves, and fans should be too. There is plenty of work to do, but getting a rim-protecting big man, a 3-and-D wing, a sixth man, and a stretch big man is strong. The Lakers are still hoping to convince a few impactful players to join them on the minimum. Even without those adds, number 77 is ready for his second full season with the purple and gold. October can’t get here soon enough.
