The Los Angeles Lakers shockingly acquired Luka Doncic from the Mavericks, and that trade has forced Dallas to gut a leadership team that built a Western Conference champion just months earlier. General manager Nico Harrison was fired for making the trade. Anthony Davis couldn’t stay on the floor and was sent packing at the deadline. Now, Jason Kidd and assistant GM Matt Riccardi are gone on the same day. Dallas clearly wants anyone involved in the deal out.

The Lakers got a superstar and changed their trajectory. They went from questioning the future with an aging LeBron James and an oft-injured Anthony Davis to having a top-five player in the world right in the middle of his prime. The Lakers were a top-four seed in the West twice since making the deal, and just won a playoff series with Doncic injured. The arrow is clearly pointing up as the Mavericks rebuild.

Dallas has been in the lottery twice and was fortunate to win it in 2025. They are now building around Cooper Flagg. Fans can expect roster turnover to follow as Masai Ujiri takes the reins and tries to make Mavs fans forget about arguably the worst trade in NBA history.

The Luka Doncic trade destroyed the Mavericks organization

Dallas won the West two years ago with Doncic as their best player. They lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals, but Luka was 25 years old. It felt the Mavericks would be a threat for the next ten years, and now all of the decision-makers from that squad are gone.

Kyrie Irving and a few role players are all that is really left in Dallas. The Luka trade had their fans turning against the organization and was a stain on the resumes for all involved. It is why governor Patrick Dumont, who is learning the NBA on the fly, has fired everyone. Doncic destroyed the Mavericks with one trade, and the Lakers are benefiting.

Luka is a superstar. That means catering to him. The Lakers have given him a say in personnel decisions and made him the face of the franchise over LeBron James. Fans don’t need me to tell them how special Doncic is. He is an all-time great in his prime. The Mavs foolishly traded him, and everyone involved is paying the price.

Jason Kidd will land on his feet. The former Lakers assistant coach has four years left on his contract and is a prime candidate for any contender looking for a new leader. The Hall of Famer led Dallas to the NBA Finals and has clicked with Kyrie Irving, Cooper Flagg, and Luka. Expect him to find another head coaching gig if he wants one, but his time in Dallas had to end.

The Los Angeles Lakers were lucky to benefit from the Mavericks foolish decision to trade Luka Doncic. It has resulted in Dallas firing every decision-maker and has the new regime ready to revamp their roster.

Doncic was heartbroken by the trade. He wanted to spend his entire career with the Mavericks, so fans can bet he is loving watching the people who did him wrong be let go.

The Lakers won the trade in a landslide, and the Mavs just keep feeling the pain. That won’t go away anytime soon. Luka is in his prime and ready to win for the next decade-plus. It will only get better for the Lakers and worse for Dallas. Those in Los Angeles won’t be complaining.
