The Los Angeles Lakers are getting dominated by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs, and it is proving that LA simply doesn’t have enough talent. Luka Doncic is out with a hamstring injury and unlikely to play in this series. The Lakers are fighting an uphill battle, but the roster must improve.
OKC has ten players they trust, and Jalen Williams isn’t even playing. They are the deepest team in the NBA, but Doncic must dethrone them to win a title. The Lakers aren’t happy being in the playoffs and winning a series. They want another championship, and that means defeating every team.
The Lakers can’t be running out Jaxson Hayes, Luke Kennard, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Jake LaRavia if they are going to defeat the Thunder. Every player in OKC’s rotation can dribble, pass, shoot, and defend. They will exploit the weaknesses of one-dimensional players. Los Angeles has too many of them to have any shot in this matchup.
Lakers don’t have enough talent around Luka Doncic
The Lakers are projected to have cap space this summer and want to build the team around number 77. They clearly need more talent and depth. Head coach JJ Redick only trusts six players and would love to upgrade on several of them.
The biggest problem is Rob Pelinka’s struggles in the draft. He has failed to select an impact player since Max Christie in 2022. That forces the purple and gold to add talent via trade or free agency. Those avenues are much more expensive than rookie contracts, and every dollar counts in the second apron era.
The Lakers have to decide on LeBron James’ future first. The 41-year-old is still playing like a star, but nobody has been in the NBA this long. He is finishing up his 23rd season. LA must get James to accept a discount if he returns. That will give the team some room to add in free agency and re-sign Austin Reaves.
The Lakers must cut Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard for players who can make an impact on both ends of the floor. They desperately need a center upgrade and have to find a true perimeter defensive stopper. It is those missing pieces that are crushing them against the Thunder.
Los Angeles has two crucial aspects of a title-contending roster in place. Luka is a top-five player in the world. Having that alpha is the toughest one to find. JJ Redick is also proving to be an elite head coach who raises his team in the playoffs. The Lakers just need the right pieces around those two to have a real shot.
The Thunder are exposing the Lakers' weaknesses. Rob Pelinka and the front office should be taking notes. LA has to fix those flaws to be a title contender in 2027 and beyond. It won’t be easy, but that is why Pelinka makes millions.
The Los Angeles Lakers don’t have enough talent to defeat the defending champions. It is clear for everyone to see. Luka Doncic wants to win a championship, so the Lakers have work to do. Stay tuned to see how it all shakes out this summer.
