The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They’ve won four straight games. It’s definitely been a team effort, but Luka Doncic has been leading the charge. He’s been unbelievable this year. And even though it’s early in the season, he looks ready to take on anyone in his path: Even Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
So far this year, in his first nine appearances, Doncic has averaged 40.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 7.7 assists while shooting 49.8% from the floor and 41.9% from beyond the arc on 13.8 three-point attempts a night. We’ve seen it before: Doncic carrying a team to the Finals with his heliocentric offensive style.
Now, he has a chance to do it with LA, and if he can keep up this pace throughout the course of the season (no easy feat), the Lakers will be able to keep up with anyone.
This version of Luka Doncic can beat anybody
Competing in today’s NBA is extremely difficult. There are so many good teams in the league, and the best of the best exist in their own plane of existence. But Doncic and the Lakers can be right there.
When Doncic was on the Dallas Mavericks, he led them to the Finals in 2024. Alongside Kyrie Irving and a group of solid role players, Doncic helped the Mavs make an incredible run.
Now, he has Austin Reaves next to him. And Walker Kessler might be better than every other player on that 2024 Mavs team outside of Doncic and Irving. The Lakers have something brewing.
Wembanyama and the Spurs are the team to beat. With all of the injuries going on with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and how hot the Spurs have been lately, they certainly look like the top team in the West.
But nobody is unbeatable. When the playoffs come around, it’s all about who can be the best player on the court. Who can lead his team better than the best player on the team across from them?
Right now, the Lakers should feel confident that Doncic is the best player on the court every single time they lace up their shoes. If they can maintain that feeling once the postseason comes around, they can beat every team in the league.
Wembanyama is the best defender on the planet. But he probably won’t be guarding Doncic in a playoff series. And if he does guard Doncic, that should open things up for Reaves and Kessler.
The Lakers have a long way to go. A very long way to go. But if Doncic keeps up this pace, the Lakers can beat anyone at any time.
