Eventually, there will come a time when there is truly no further way to keep hammering home just how badly the Los Angeles Lakers won the Luka Doncic trade. Today is not that time. Doncic’s insane month of March has an Anthony Davis connection to make.
Davis did not survive being with the Dallas Mavericks for too long. It took just about a year for the star big man to go from California to Texas to basketball purgatory (Washington, D.C.). Before being cast off to the Washington Wizards, AD managed to score 587 points in a Mavericks uniform.
If that does not sound like a lot, that is because it is not. Davis only suited up for 29 regular season games in his Mavericks career. A measly number that is going to look like the most awkward blip on his career that is otherwise heading for the Hall of Fame.
How insignificant are those 587 points? Well, Doncic just outdid them in one month. Luka's March was absolutely incredible. The superstar point guard passed Kobe Bryant for most points scored in a single calendar month by a Laker. What was that number? 600.
Luka Doncic's March trumped Anthony Davis' entire time in Dallas
For those rubbing their eyes and not believing what they are seeing, or for those trying to wrap their head around what they just read as a concept, it is exactly what you think it is.
Doncic has more points in this past month with the Lakers than Davis did during his entire time with the Mavericks. What makes things even crazier is it took him less games (16) to outpace what his counterpart did in Dallas. Absurd? Absurd.
This is not meant to be a knock on Davis. Lakers fans will always be thankful for the role their former star played in the 2020 championship. It has also been unfortunate to watch AD struggle with injuries again from a distance. There is no intent of this being a hit piece on Davis.
It is simply yet another celebration of just how good the Doncic trade has been for the Lakers.
Fans of the franchise have been blessed with an MVP candidate in the midst of his prime. The Lakers and those who support them just got to watch Doncic average 37.5 points per game in March on a 62.9 true shooting percentage.
The Lakers are set up for plenty of good times with Doncic at the helm. A day without thanking Nico Harrison should not go by in Los Angeles.
