Luka Doncic needs the Los Angeles Lakers to make a Bronny James decision this summer. One that will be crucial to the team’s future. Because, despite James’ development, continuing to use a roster spot on a guy that may not have a place in the team isn’t good. Regardless of whether LeBron James stays or leaves, the Lakers’ Bronny choice will show how serious they are about building around Doncic.
Perhaps the Lakers see Bronny as a long-term piece. A guy who can defend the perimeter and knock down threes. But there’s no getting around the fact that LeBron’s presence was the primary reason the Lakers drafted him. But now that Doncic is in town, the Lakers can’t afford to waste roster spots.
So, the Lakers need to decide – do they see Bronny as a long-term Doncic fit? If not, they need to use the roster spot on someone else.
The Lakers' Bronny decision will show how serious they are about building around Luka Doncic
Bronny has shown flashes of solid play. In his limited minutes this year, he shot well from deep range, and he’s played well in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, too.
But he still doesn’t shoot with the ultimate confidence, and there are times when the decision-making just doesn’t look there. And that’s okay for a young player. But Bronny is about to be in his third year.
Again, if the Lakers see a world where Bronny can genuinely turn into a rotation player, then it makes sense to keep him around. But at this point, they are better off looking elsewhere.
There are plenty of young players who could fit better and are more ready to contribute, and also a lot of veterans who could help out the Lakers at the end of the bench.
Building around Doncic isn’t easy. You need shooting. You need defense. And perhaps most importantly, you need depth. That’s where Bronny’s roster spot comes into play.
The Lakers need to get the most out of every single roster spot if they want to give Doncic the best chance of winning a title. And at this point, letting LeBron walk might be for the best, as they could use that money to sign better depth pieces.
At that point, is Bronny still around? Does LeBron leaving mean that the Lakers will no longer be tied to Bronny? And in general, regardless of LeBron’s status, there may be better players available than what Bronny brings to the table.
Better shooters. More NBA-ready defenders. Guys who could help Doncic right now.
That’s why this summer’s Bronny decision will paint the picture. Because it will show how serious the Lakers are about building around Doncic (and how much they believe in Bronny).
