Bullying has consequences. That much is true in the more serious sense and in terms of basketball. LeBron James and Luka Doncic offer perfect examples of that.
Both players have invited a brand of bully-ball hoops as a part of their offense throughout their careers. It has been effective for both Doncic and James. Even so, there are drawbacks to playing with that kind of force and physicality.
That mainly has to do with how much each player will get hacked and the type of leeway officiating crews will typically offer to those guarding them. In their own individual ways, Doncic and James are both capable at forcing their way into the interior. When there is no bucket as a reward, they can sometimes be left with trouble that was not worth the effort.
LeBron James is the poster child of not getting the calls he is owed
James is the best example of a player in NBA history who should have shot way more free throws than he actually did. Even at his advanced age during the 2025-26 season, LeBron was still attacking the basket with force. The whistles have not matched that aggression.
This is something JJ Redick was unshy about discussing on several instances, including last season's playoff run. After a loss in Game 2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Lakers coach made a loud statement on his former star.
"LeBron has the worst whistle of any star player I've ever seen," Redick said.
The head coach in Los Angeles pointed to James' size and strength as a primary reason for him not getting enough calls in his favor. It is easy to chalk this up to ramblings of a frustrated head coach. However, there is way too much film out there of LeBron being forced to deal with unreasonable contact to no end for it to be totally untrue.
Luka Doncic can be found complaining for very similar reasons
The whole narrative about Doncic spending more time complaining to the referees than playing defense (or anything of that sort) is wildly overstated. However, Luka does get in the officiating crew's ears. Pretending it does not happen at all would be just as disingenuous as the first sentiment.
Doncic may not have the same kind of speed and athleticism that his old teammate did at the peak of his powers, or even last season. Even so, Luka does still throw his strength around a ton. When he does, that can often give those refs the leeway to let things play on in instances when the Lakers superstar clearly gets hacked on his attempts.
In those moments, you will immediately catch Doncic with a look of disgust on his face.
Granted, It would be malpractice to ignore than Luka led the league in free throw attempts per game for the first time in his career during 2025-26. That is more of a volume stat than anything else. Doncic also led the NBA in usage percentage last season. When you are finishing actions as much as he is, those things will go your way enough times to post that type of figure.
In short, it can often be understandable why Doncic has the frustration that he displays. It is not like being upset with an official is something unique to him either. Plenty of stars are the same.
The point here is there is substance to Luka doing what he does. LeBron should understand as well as anyone else.
