Peyton Watson rumor gifts Lakers perfect way out of Jarred Vanderbilt contract

The Nuggets want to clear space to re-sign Peyton Watson. A Johnson for Vanderbilt trade would help.

Jarred Vanderbilt is a fine defensive player, but injuries, dwindling minutes, and the two remaining seasons on his contract have made him an imperfect fit for the Los Angeles Lakers. Unfortunately, it's been difficult to project a trade that would help Los Angeles move on from the polarizing forward.

As the Denver Nuggets look to clear financial space in order to re-sign Peyton Watson, however, a Vanderbilt for Cameron Johnson trade is suddenly worth considering.

Johnson is a sharpshooting forward whom many would likely love to acquire based on talent alone. Unfortunately, the 2026 offseason is a golden opportunity for the Lakers to strike gold in free agency due in no small part to how limited other teams' finances are. The same thus applies to this potential trade.

The Lakers can thank Denver's own financial crunch for the opportunity, as Tim Bontemps of ESPN is reporting that the Nuggets are willing to trade Johnson in order to create space to re-sign Watson.

"The Nuggets have never been big spenders, which is why the belief around the league is that Cameron Johnson (on an expiring $23 million deal) or Christian Braun (on a five-year, $125 million extension signed in the fall) is likely to be moved to create enough room to give Watson something in the per-year range of those players."

The reason a Johnson for Vanderbilt trade is thus realistic: There aren't many teams that can take on Johnson's $23,062,500 salary without coming close to matching it.

Cam Johnson for Jarred Vanderbilt is more realistic than it may seem

According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, only five teams are on pace to have even swing cap space this offseason. Those teams are the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and Los Angeles Lakers. That may just determine who's able to acquire Johnson by exchanging a smaller salary.

Other franchises can clearly maneuver to make something work, but doing so will prove challenging—particularly if they have other needs to address in free agency.

The Lakers, meanwhile, have the potential for $48.4 million in cap space, per Smith. That grants them a significant degree of flexibility in regard to how they could acquire Johnson. Such a trade could thus center around an exchange that proves mutually beneficial.

In it, Johnson's $23,062,500 figure for the 2026-27 season would be exchanged for Vanderbilt's $12,428,571—thus cutting more than $10.6 million in salary from the Nuggets' payroll.

It must be reiterated that this is a speculative idea and not a rumored trade, but the Nuggets would have significant reason to consider this offer. Brooklyn and Chicago are rebuilding, and Atlanta already has a potential $20-plus million expiring salary on its books with Jonathan Kuminga. Perhaps Detroit could step in and offer Caris LeVert, but if that's the competition, Los Angeles at least has a chance.

It'd be a risky move during the first flexible offseason of the Luka Doncic era, but getting out of Vanderbilt's contract while acquiring a sharpshooting forward on an expiring deal would be a win.
