3. Wenyen Gabriel, South Sudan
Wenyen Gabriel spent parts of two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He became a fan favorite in short order, playing with the energy and defensive intensity that supporters of the Lakers wish they could see from every player on the roster.
Gabriel is now headed to the 2024 Summer Olympics as a player on the South Sudan squad that pushed Team USA to the brink of defeat in an exhibition game.
Gabriel was one of the star performers when South Sudan shocked the world by nearly defeating the Americans at the USA Basketball Showcase. Team USA ultimately prevailed for a 101-100 victory, but it required one of the best showings of LeBron James' international career to prevent the upset.
Gabriel shot the lights out for his side, recording 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 mark from beyond the arc.
Gabriel will now play a leading role as South Sudan's men's basketball team makes its Olympics debut. He'll play professionally in Israel next season, although his quality showings on the international stage could garner NBA interest.
Perhaps we haven't seen the last of Gabriel in the purple and gold. There are second apron factors to consider, but it would be a pleasant surprise.
