Honorable Mention: Kyle Filipowski, Duke Blue Devils

Ambitious Upside Comparison: Lauri Markkanen

Realistic Upside Comparison: Kelly Olynyk

The Los Angeles Lakers have been commonly linked to Duke Blue Devils big man Kyle Filipowski during the buildup to the 2024 NBA Draft. It's understandable, as many agree the Lakers need to shore up the interior with a player who can operate alongside Anthony Davis.

A negative wingspan has some pondering how well Filipowski will be able to defend in the NBA, but don't lose sight of how big a 6'11" scorer with a 6'10.5" wingspan still is.

From a physical perspective, Filipowski compares to 11-year NBA veteran Kelly Olynyk and All-Star Lauri Markkanen. They're all similar in height, wingspan, and weight, and their playing styles coming out of college are remarkably alike.

As such, it's easy to see why NBA teams are so interested in drafting a player who's similar to Markkanen and Olynyk in an era that has become even more friendly to their style of play.

In terms of how Filipowski fits, he looks the part of the perfect offensive complement to Davis. He's capable of attacking from the perimeter, has improved significantly as a shooter, has the weight to back opponents down, is a skilled passer, thrives on the offensive glass, and plays above the rim.

Considering the Lakers ranked dead last in second-chance points in 2023-24 and lack frontcourt talent to develop long-term, Filipowski is a player worth taking a chance on.
