The situation in Los Angeles is officially awkward. ESPN insider Shams Charania broke the news yesterday that the trade sending Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers had been rescinded.

Multiple sources, including Michael Scotto and Jovan Buha then stepped in to explain it was due to the Hornets failing to satisfy a condition of the trade. Bobby Marks highlighted that the trade was conditional on Williams and Dalton Knecht reporting and passing a physical. As a result, all the pieces involved in the deal are heading back to the original destination from which they were sent.

This led to the Hornets welcoming back Williams in incredibly embarassing fashion.

Lakers fans will not be too happy with the immediate implications of the outlook in Los Angeles after this deal fell through. However, in the long run, it will probably work out for the best.

The 2024-25 Lakers take a hit, but the team is saved moving forward

Without Williams in the mix, it is tough to be remotely excited about the Lakers' center rotation for the 2024-25 NBA season. Simply put, it is not good enough and will probably significantly impact their title hopes in this year's campaign. That being said, the Lakers may have just dodged a bullet.

Putting all the reports together, the implications of why this deal fell through suggest it was due to Williams' health. If the Lakers were about to be saddled with a situation where they could not trust the long-term availability of their new starting center, it really may not be such a bad thing that this is a problem they will not have to deal with.

Los Angeles already lived through having ponder whether Anthony Davis would be able to hold up for the duration of an NBA season. That situation should offer a reminder about how tough it is to build around foundational pieces whose health is a sizeable question mark.

Considering the Lakers were originally going to give up a promising rookie, a pick swap, and an unprotected first-round pick for the services of Williams, that would have been a lot to surrender for a health risk.

The silver lining here is that Knecht is a player who should fit pretty well around Luka Doncic. Perhaps the Lakers rookie will even have a chip on his shoulder after nearly being shipped out of town.

There is no doubt that Los Angeles will face challenges as a result of this outcome in 2024-25. However, they may have saved themselves from multiple seasons of trials and tribulations in the grand scheme of things.
