Walker Kessler wanted to move on from the Utah Jazz to the Los Angeles Lakers, and he got it. That was accomplished despite the hurdles and red tape of him being a restricted free agent this summer. Aaron Mintz of CAA Sports managed to work his magic and get his client to where he wanted to go.
Mintz is also the same guy who got Trae Young away from the Atlanta Hawks and found him a great new home with the Washington Wizards. What other team was going to give Young the bloated new contract that he just got during this offseason? Trae got his move and got the bag.
If you read the tea leaves, that should make Domantas Sabonis someone who is primed to be on the move in the near future. Brian Windhorst pointed out on a recent episode of The Hoop Collective that Sabonis just hired Mintz to represent him.
Given what has been known over the last season or so, that should mark the Sacramento Kings center as primed to be on the move. This could just be a matter of when, not if.
Domantas Sabonis hired the same agent who helped Walker Kessler get to LA
Scott Perry moved in as general manager of the Kings in April of 2025 and has since sent the roster on a path to rebuilding. The new direction in Sacramento has not yet managed to find a change of scenery for two of their veteran stars. Sabonis and Zach LaVine remain in limbo with the franchise.
Their star center has been floated in trade rumors since the moment Perry arrived. Despite those murmurings not going away, nothing has materialized to get Sabonis out of Sacramento.
It is not all too hard to figure out why. Sabonis' contract is massive. It does not stack up great against his quality of player. That four-year, $186 million deal would give any team looking to potentially add him enough reason to at least hit pause.
The good news for Sabonis is that 2026-27 will be the second-last year of his current deal. That should make that contract an easier pill to swallow for competitive teams who are looking to be buyers.
The goal between now and the 2027 NBA trade deadline would be to build up his trade value to aid the efforts of leaving the Kings. If Sabonis can get back to being an All-Star and All-NBA guy, perhaps there is a team outside of Sacramento willing to swallow the expensive pill that is his deal for a couple of years.
Kessler pointed to Los Angeles and Mintz got him there. If Sabonis can supply the production, his agent should be able to guide him to the exit door like he has for his other clients.
