NBA legend, Bill Walton, had some interesting advice to son, Luke Walton, in regards to the Lakers’ head coaching vacancy

Almost exactly a month ago to date, Bill Walton was asked by ESPN about the prospect of his son leaving his position as assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors for a head coaching job.

At the time, the availability in question was with the New York Knicks and his answer was not shocking when you consider his old school persona.

Per Ian Begley of ESPN, the elder Walton revealed,

"I want what’s best for Luke Walton.I’m a warrior of the Golden State. It doesn’t get any better than what he’s got right now ever in life, and money will not make that happen again. It’s there now. Head coaching jobs, they’re open for a reason, and what he’s got, just stay there."

Only a month removed from said interview, Bill gave almost exactly the same advice, but this time in regards to the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching vacancy.

In an interview with KTVK-TV, a Phoenix, Arizona based television station, when asked what his advice for his son is currently he stated,

"Stay where he is. Head coaching jobs are open for a reason… What he has right now, it doesn’t get any better than that. Money cannot buy what they have on the Warriors right now. I’ve been on some of the most special teams in the history of basketball — UCLA, Portland and the Celtics. I’ve seen the other end of the spectrum too and so I know. It’s so fragile, it’s so tenuous."

He followed this up by saying,

"It’s like with any young person chasing their dream, in the world of entrepreneurship and startups and everything, don’t change jobs for money. . . Leave a job because it’s a bad job."

Starting off with his rehearsed “head coaching jobs are open for a reason,” line it seemed like he was going to say exactly the same thing he said in March, but his little bit of fatherly knowledge was a delightful added touch.

However, after going on to say once again what a great situation his son is currently in he broke his stern demeanor and cracked a smile towards the very end of the interview saying, “With all that being said… Did you listen to your dad, Tim?”

Despite coming out and publicly saying that he won’t discuss the Lakers’ opening and that he loves his job with the Warriors, it’s beginning to look more and more like there could be a Luke Walton reunion in Los Angeles come next season.

Until then, we’ll just have to hope that Luke’s still a

rebellious kid at heart and does exactly the opposite of what his dad advised him to do.
