The Indiana Pacers are reportedly fielding offers for Paul George before the trade deadline and the Los Angeles Lakers are rumored to be interested.

After standing pat at the trade deadline for the past two years, the Los Angeles Lakers finally made a move on Tuesday, trading Lou Williams to the Houston Rockets for Corey Brewer and Houston’s first round pick in the 2017 draft. Not a bad trade for a franchise that has been in flux over the past 48 hours.

While most fans expected Williams to be gone before Thursday’s trade deadline, the situation in the front office made it hard to believe the Lakers would actually pull off a trade, but they somehow did. Now that Williams is gone, president of basketball operations Magic Johnson is looking at other ways to improve his roster. That includes calling some old friends to try and swing a superstar deal.

Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported earlier today that the Pacers were “gauging the trade market” for the 26-year-old forward.

Obviously, swinging a trade for George would jump start the Lakers’ rebuild in a huge way, but the pieces they would have to give up to acquire the four-time All-Star in a trade would be costly. This is Larry Bird we’re talking about, not Vlade Divac.

LA would be better off waiting for George to hit the open market in 2018. According to Wojnarowski, George “has considered re-signing with Indiana or joining his hometown Los Angeles Lakers.”

Any trade for George would likely involve one or several of the Lakers young pieces, which isn’t ideal.
