This last deal is a bit of a different deal than ones that were otherwise listed. While the other deals involved selling off talent and acquiring assets, the Lakers would be using assets in this trade to acquire talent. With Detroit likely losing out on Greg Monroe this summer, they have been open to trading him and could look to deal him around the trade deadline.

Reportedly, the Pistons wanted a first round pick for Monroe, which doesn’t seem unreasonable. The Lakers have an extra draft pick already this year and were willing to move one for Rondo. With Monroe, while they’re getting a half-year rental, the big thing would be holding onto his bird rights this summer and hoping to persuade him into staying. Think of it as a far less risky Dwight Howard situation.
Fortunately for them, they have Steve Nash, or more specifically his contract, to include in trades. Reportedly, a large amount Nash’s contract is being covered insurance, lessening the blow taken on by another team. To make salaries and contracts match, Detroit would have to include Anthony, but his deal also expires this summer, maintaining the Lakers flexibility.
