Game Grades: Late-Game Collapse Lets Lakers Tank Roll On

97. 20. Final. 103. 38

MVP: Let’s be honest, no one from the fourth quarter on played well for the Lakers. Because of that, we give the award to Ryan Kelly, who was absolute en fuego in the third quarter. His five three-pointers reminded everyone that he’s still a great player and had pro-tankers panicking.

LVP: Nick Young, who had an atrocious outing. The only Laker not to make a field goal, the only Laker not to score, and only 16 minutes of action tonight. Swaggy P is quickly souring fans.

Stat of the Night: 34-19. As in the score over the fourth quarter and overtime. In the final quarter and OT, the Lakers were awful and the Magic were just slightly less awful. In the end, it was just enough for the Magic to force OT and pull away in the extra frame.

The Starters

SG. Los Angeles Lakers. WAYNE ELLINGTON. C-. 37 min, 3-10 FG, 2-7 3P, 2-3 FT, 10 PTS, 4 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 0 BLK, 2 TO
The next step for Wayne Ellington’s progression is consistency and stringing together multiple solid games, something he’s struggled to do this year.

C. 23 min, 1-5 FG, 0-0 FT, 2 PTS, 6 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 0 BLK, 2 TO

Tarik Black was a relative non-factor tonight in probably his worst game as a Laker. And I’d still take him over Robert Sacre.
. PF. Los Angeles Lakers. TARIK BLACK

PG. Los Angeles Lakers. JORDAN CLARKSON. B+. 31 min, 6-14 FG, 1-4 3P, 1-2 FT, 14 PTS, 2 REB, 6 AST, 4 STL, 0 BLK, 3 TO
First half Jordan Clarkson is A+. Second half Clarkson was not nearly as good. It averages out to a solid performance, though.

A. 33 min, 6-14 FG, 5-6 3P, 3-3 FT, 20 PTS, 5 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK, 0 TO
Just when everyone is ready to give up on Kelly, he goes and does this.
. PF. Los Angeles Lakers. RYAN KELLY

C+. 20 min, 4-12 FG, 2-2 FT, 10 PTS, 6 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 2 BLK, 0 TO
There was too many times tonight that Robert Sacre had the ball in clutch situations. And you say we aren’t tanking.
. C. Los Angeles Lakers. ROBERT SACRE

The Bench

C. 31 min, 4-9 FG, 1-4 3P, 0-0 FT, 9 PTS, 9 REB, 2 AST, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 3 TO
Wesley Johnson was making more than a couple pro-tankers mad with his random big buckets tonight.
. SF. Los Angeles Lakers. WESLEY JOHNSON

PF. Los Angeles Lakers. ED DAVIS. C. 21 min, 2-6 FG, 0-2 FT, 4 PTS, 6 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 3 BLK, 0 TO
After his explosion against the Buckets, Ed Davis turned in a far more pedestrian stat line.

C. Los Angeles Lakers. CARLOS BOOZER. B-. 18 min, 7-13 FG, 0-1 FT, 14 PTS, 3 REB, 2 AST, 2 STL, 0 BLK, 2 TO
The Carlos Boozer experience tonight saw him make just enough tanking plays to cancel out his continued solid play this year.

A-. 22 min, 6-8 FG, 2-2 3P, 0-0 FT, 14 PTS, 1 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL, 1 BLK, 2 TO
Much like Clarkson, Jeremy Lin was aggressive to start, but faded down the stretch.
. PG. Los Angeles Lakers. JEREMY LIN

F. 16 min, 0-6 FG, 0-3 3P, 0-0 FT, 0 PTS, 1 REB, 3 AST, 0 STL, 0 BLK, 0 TO
Young certainly had drawn the ire of Byron Scott even before tonight’s horrid shooting night. He definitely needs to improve, and do it quickly.
. SG. Los Angeles Lakers. NICK YOUNG
