Kobe Bryant News: Kenny Smith Gives Expectations For Mamba

It’s pretty safe to say we’re all hoping for the best but nervous about the worst-case scenario at this point in Kobe Bryant’s career. Forecasting points per game or efficiency stats is pretty shortsighted given that Bryant is coming off consecutive season-ending injuries.

Kenny Smith spoke to the LA Daily News’ Mark Medina and had this to say about what he expects from Kobe:

"“I just hope he’s healthy, healthy as a 36 year old can be,” Smith said. “I’m hoping for that. I’m not hoping for Kobe of 22. That’s not going to happen.”"

Makes sense. Why hope for anything other than a full season? Doing so is a great way to be let down.

Instead, I’d much rather sit back and enjoy whatever it is we do get from Kobe. If he can make it through and finish his career on something of a high note, while also mentoring young guards like D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson, anyone who criticizes any of the stats he compiles along the way will be showcasing an utter lack of perspective.

Smith reiterated the same message while talking about the Lakers’ team-wide expectations.

"“It all depends on Kobe’s injuries and how well healthy is he,” Smith said. “That’s going to dictate what happens next door here at Staples Center.”"

Again, what Smith says makes a ton of sense, and I’m sure there wasn’t much time to really get into the specifics of what he’s hoping to see from the Lakers. Though it would’ve been nice to hear something more along the lines of Bryant’s health plus the young guys’ development.
