Although the trade deadline was a disappointment for Lakers fans who hoped to see their team shake things up before the end of the season, all hope is not lost

Over the remaining 25 or so games, the Lakers still have the opportunity to make cuts or buyouts in order to open roster spots. Opening up at least two such spots would be the wisest course of action, although with the current front office, there’s no guarantee they will make even a single cut.

If they do, however, there are several players who could fit in nicely with the team. One such player was just released, and his name is Jakarr Sampson.

In keeping with the tradition of this series, Sampson began the season on the 76ers, before being cut in response to a trade made by his team. While his release isn’t a great sign for his future in the league, Sampson could still have value to another team.

The 6’8″ forward’s value comes primarily on defense, where his athleticism and size allow him to be disruptive. Although he typically plays the power forward spot, his speed and quickness could allow him to slide to the 3 for the Lakers. However, he’d more likely be featured alongside another power forward, similar to the pairing of Larry Nance Jr.and Brandon Bass, in an attempt to go small.

Although he sometimes looks out of sorts, the 22 year old forward plays with a high motor, which could help the Lakers to solve their current rebounding woes. While his lack of shooting would be problematic on the wing, he would represent a dramatic improvement in transition over the current Lakers prospects.

Jakarr Sampson also fits well with the Lakers young core, as he is 22 years old. While he is no longer a rookie, he definitely still has room to grow, and developing a jump shot could make him a truly valuable player.

Without a jumper, it remains to be seen whether Sampson will be able to carve out a long term niche in the NBA. Fortunately, he represents little risk to the Lakers, as the only cost to acquiring him would be the release of a player who the Lakers likely wouldn’t keep beyond this year regardless.

Although Sampson does not provide the same level of potential value that the other players profiled in this series bring to the table, he could still be a positive presence under the right circumstances.

Further, while Jakarr Sampson may never become a starting caliber player in the NBA, his energy and athleticism could prove valuable for the Lakers on both ends of the court.

As the Lakers begin to look towards next season and beyond, Sampson should be a player who they consider bringing on-board.
