Reports indicate Lakers president Jeanie Buss is pushing to retain Byron Scott as head coach

Los Angeles Lakers fans have lamented the coaching stylings of Byron Scott all season long. Whether it’s been his repetition of cliched phrases that have no consequences when it comes to coaching a team, benching the young players looked at as the future of the organization, or just simply crossing his arms during a game when he could be—ya’ know—coaching, Byron’s rubbed plenty of people the wrong way this season.

One of those people was apparently not Lakers president and part owner Jeanie Buss.

According to a report from Ken Berger of CBS Sports earlier this week, Buss is said to be a voice within the organization pushing for the Lakers to keep Scott as the team’s head coach. Moreover, Berger reports that there is a “major chance” that Byron could stay in hopes that it would allow the franchise to regroup in 2017 and possibly bring in Phil Jackson as part of the front office.

While bringing in a legendary part of Lakers history and the man who drafted Kristaps Porzingis into the fold with Jackson might be enticing to some Lakers fans, the notion of doing so at the cost of having Byron Scott around for another season is certainly not.

There’s no doubt that the organization is in an odd and transitional position in the wake of Kobe Bryant‘s retirement and as they have so many options this offseason in regards to a potential lottery pick in the 2016 NBA Draft and having an ample amount of cap room with a rich free agency class hitting the open market. However, the move to let Scott go seemed like a formality—a welcomed one at that.

Now it appears that may not be the case anymore, only further adding to the uncertainty. If Byron Scott does return, though, that uncertainty may also be met with the ire of fans as that decision largely would be unwelcome by the fanbase.
