The Lakers reportedly aren’t 100 percent on taking Brandon Ingram with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft

Los Angeles Lakers fans will be quick to recall all of the chatter leading up to the NBA Draft just last year. It seemed for quite some time like a formality that the Lakers would be selecting Jahlil Okafor with the No. 2 overall pick. When draft night rolled around, though, the Lakers selected a guard in D’Angelo Russell.

So as the Lakers again have the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, the question is whether or not they will stick to conventional wisdom and likely take Brandon Ingram after Ben Simmons goes No. 1 or if they’ll do something crazy to shake things up. Less than two weeks away and the likelihood that they do something wild is increasing daily.

According to Steve Kyle of Basketball Insiders, the Lakers still aren’t sold on Brandon Ingram with the No. 2 pick and that’s why they’re continuing to work out other players and so on:

Kyler added also that the pattern that the Lakers have displayed leading up to this point and leading up to the draft has been quite similar to last year when the team took Russell. There’s been an assumption about what the team will do, but other factors indicate a potentially different plan.

That being said, passing on Ingram at No. 2 and simply taking another player in that position would be a grave mistake on the part of the Lakers. Even if they aren’t sold, there are teams that undoubtedly are and would be willing to trade up and give LA more assets to continue rebuilding with.

If we were handicapping the odds of the potential outcomes for the Lakers in the 2016 NBA Draft, I’d have to give the best odds to them keeping the pick and taking Brandon Ingram at No. 2. As they continue to work out players up until June 23, though, be sure to be prepared for the unexpected.
