It is now official, the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers will be donning number 14 come the regular season and perhaps even sooner at July’s Las Vegas Summer League
After being selected second overall by the Los Angeles Lakers just over a week ago, it looked as if Brandon Ingram was leaning towards using his old high school number 13 for the Purple and Gold.
However, as we all know, of the nine numbers the Lakers have retired, 13 is currently hanging in the rafters to honor the late, great Wilt Chamberlain.

Therefore, in similar fashion to what he did at Duke University, on account of the fact that teammate Matt Jones had already taken number 13, Ingram chose the next best thing, 14.
Looking down the list of players who have worn number 14 for the Lakers, there aren’t that many stand outs, barring the great conqueror, Stanislav Medvedenko, so it’ll be nice for Ingram to get a chance to have his own jersey hanging from the rafters one day.
Ingram and fellow draftee, Ivica Zubac have yet to formerly be introduced to the team so it’s ironic that you can already purchase the former’s gear on the Lakers Store official website.
Hopefully, this is a number we will see in not only the Purple and Gold, but also the crimson red All-Star jerseys and black and white Rookie/Sophomore challenge jerseys as well.
If Ingram and the young core continue to put in work just as they have been, the road back to relevance is definitely in sight. Add this work ethic to signing a free agent or two this offseason and greatness awaits.
As an organization, and fanbase, that has been spoiled with quick rebuilds and blockbuster trades, it’s time for this old dog to learn a new trick and stay patient, the future is loading.

Who knows, maybe Brandon Ingram’s “uh-oh” subtweet was just about him realizing that he wasn’t going to be able to wear number 13 for the Lakers? Only kidding…
