Weakness: Physical Strength and Explosiveness

Although Ivica Zubac moves well for his size, his overall physical strength and athleticism are one of his weaknesses. At times, viewers were reminded that Zubac is only nineteen years old, as he was pushed off his spot by more physically solid players.

Lateral movement while defending the perimeter has also been a point of difficulty for the young center, although his straight line speed and acceleration are impressive for his size. He may have trouble defending the pick and roll early on in his career and will need to learn to overcome his limitations with a more nuanced approach.

Zubac also lacks elite athleticism in terms of leaping. While he gets off the ground fairly quickly, he doesn’t get up particularly high and needs to work on his second effort. While he will never be a high-flyer, his quickness and foot speed should improve with a consistent NBA training program.

Fortunately for the Lakers, there is good reason to be optimistic about Zubac’ physical outlook. His strength will improve naturally as he gets older and his already sturdy frame suggests he could eventually develop into a physically imposing big man in this league.

Touching back on athleticism, Summer League was a promising step forward for a player who has suffered through significant injuries already. Because Zubac has struggled with knee issues in the past, it is very likely that his agility and explosiveness will improve as he continues to heal and become stronger.

If Zubac takes even modest steps forward in lateral and vertical athleticism, he will solidify himself as yet another steal for the Los Angeles Lakers.
