Don’t expect Nick Young to go running to Lakers former head coach Byron Scott for advice ahead of Saturday night’s three-point contest.
It’s no secret that Nick Young and Byron Scott did not get along during Scott’s tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers. Scott often condemned young for his lack of maturity and Young had a hard time cracking the rotation because of it.
To the surprise of literally no one, Scott was wrong. Young is playing some of the best basketball of his career and he is being rewarded by participating in the three-point contest at All-Star Weekend. Ironically, Scott was the last Laker to compete in the three-point contest, but Young won’t seek his advice before Saturday night’s shootout, according to Mark Medina of the OC Register.
"When the NBA hosts its 3-point shooting contest as part of All-Star Weekend on Saturday at Smoothie King Center, Young will become the third Lakers player to participate in the event after Byron Scott (1987, 1988) and Michael Cooper (1987). Young didn’t miss an opportunity to take a jab at the former Lakers coach, who he frequently clashed with over playing time and public criticisms.“I might pick Cooper’s brain,” Young said of his contest preparation. “But I don’t know if Byron would tell me the right thing to do.”"
Michael Cooper is a regular guest analyst on Spectrum Sports Net and a respected member of the Showtime Lakers, while Scott is one of the worst b-words a Lakers fan can say. You know, except for “bust.”

Young also took an opportunity to boast about his new head coach, Luke Walton, who he feels has been crucial to his comeback season with the Purple and Gold.
"“With having a coach behind me, I don’t have to look over my shoulder or worry about coming out. That plays a major part,” said the 31-year-old Young, who grew up a Lakers fan and attended championship parades while starring at Cleveland High of Reseda and USC. “It messes up with your whole cycle when you have a coach who harps on everything you do and talks so down on you. It was tough.”"
We’ll see if Young’s reluctance to reach out to Scott pays off Saturday night. My guess is, it will. Unless he’s hoping to win the two-point contest. Or a spelling bee and the last word is “lackadaisical.” Otherwise, Nick is better off on his own.
