Los Angeles Lakers: Three reasons signing Rajon Rondo would be a mistake
By Matt Leaman
Lack of Shooting:
Over Rondo’s career, he’s lived off his passing skills, and ability to get to the basket. His passing is some of the best we’ve seen from a point guard in recent seasons, averaging 8.5 assists over his career. Also, last season he attempted 229 shots from less than 5 feet, shooting 49 percent from that range. Those are the two strengths of his game, neither of which the Lakers are in dire need of.
A glaring weakness in Rondo’s game is his overall shooting from the floor. Over Rondo’s career, he’s a 46 percent shooter from the field. This number isn’t alarming, but his past few seasons have seen this number plummet. In the last four seasons, he’s shooting 42.6, 45.4, and 40.8 percent respectively.
Moving on, three-point shooting has never been a part of Rondo’s game. With the Chicago Bulls last season, he shot 37.6 percent from three, his highest percentage during his career. Rondo has seen his three-point percentage dip as low as 20.7 percent during his career.
To finish, Rondo is also just a career 60.6 percent free throw shooter. The Lakers have a big need for veterans that can shoot from distance, and Rondo doesn’t fit that description. Three-point shooting is arguably the biggest need the Lakers have.
