Ball doesn’t lie, and neither do the shoes in Lonzo Ball’s progression through NBA Summer League play, the shoes are making a difference.
Lonzo Ball and Big Baller Brand (BBB) are now synonymous but is the Ball family slowly abandoning the $495 BBB shoes? Lonzo say’s it’s what Big Ballers do; they can play in whatever shoe they want too. But he said that after one bad performance and a triple-double performance.
Lonzo wore his Lakers inspired BBB ZO2s kicks in black and gold for game one, and it didn’t go well. The Lakers lost, and Lonzo went two-for-15 from the field missing ten three’s in the loss to the Clippers.
In game two, the Lakers lost to the Celtics, but, Lonzo hit a triple-double; 11 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. He wore his BBB ZO2s in white with Lakers purple and gold accents.
Against the Philadelphia 76ers, Lonzo wore lavender Nike Kobe A.D.’s and scored 36 points, earned eight rebounds and pushed 11 assists. “Mamba mentality,” explained Ball post-game, “Thought I’d switch it up.”

In game three, the Lakers had to win to move on in the tournament, and they beat the Cavs 94-83, Lonzo, the Lakers 6-foot-6 19-year-old rookie, wore his college shoes, the Adidas Harden LS Primeknit. Lonzo scored 16 points, dished 12 assists and grabbed ten rebounds.

Lakers digital reporter Joey Ramirez reported today that Ball could break some records in the NBA Summer League:
"He leads the Las Vegas Summer League in assists and steals. He leads all guards in rebounds and blocks. He’s on pace for the most dimes in the event’s history.1Simply put, Lonzo Ball is doing it all for the Lakers.Averaging 17.0 points, 9.8 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 1.5 blocks, Ball has somehow managed to brighten the already-blinding spotlight on himself."
Back in the 90’s Spike Lee and Michael Jordan made a Nike commercial about Jordan’s game and what made it so good. Spike contends that it’s all about the shoes, Jordan dispels that thought, but also sells a ton of shoes with this ad and continues to sell his Nike Jordan wear to this day.
The Adidas win! And of course, they would! Not only did Lonzo wear Adidas shoes throughout his UCLA career, but he also wore them to his Lakers tryouts. UCLA was an Adidas school last season, but they have since signed a ginormous deal with Under Armour. Future Bruin Jalen Hill is not happy about it, and he’s been wearing Adidas while playing for his AAU team The Compton Magic who supplied him with loads of Adidas kicks. He tells me his thoughts in this interview after the Ballislife All-American game.
Just think about your shoes. There is a particular shoe that is my go-to, On’s, made in Europe. They are running shoes, but I can interview ballers all day wearing them. I also spent a full day and night with my family at Disney land, and wouldn’t have survived without them.
If I had to wear shoes that were uncomfortable, or I wasn’t used to wearing and being able to last all day, I wouldn’t be as productive. Just saying.
Next: How will Lonzo Ball transform the Lakers?
Same goes for basketball players, football players, tennis players, baseball players and so on. Every athlete has their favorite brand or favorite shoes to play in. For Ball, they are not BBB ZO2’s; they are Adidas. Nike Kobe’s work too, but those 36 points are hard to argue with. Yes, it is all about the shoes!
