Los Angeles Lakers point guard Isaiah Thomas will be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ailing hip.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks. They received some bad news in regards to Isaiah Thomas today.

It was announced that Thomas will be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ailing hip. The Lakers announced it on their official Twitter account and that Thomas will undergo the surgery on Thursday.

They also added that an update would be shared about Thomas once he completes surgery. This will end his season, and possibly his Lakers career.

Thomas has been dealing with the hip injury for months. He missed the first 36 games of the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers because of the injury. That injury was a big reason for Thomas being traded to the Lakers, as he never meshed with the Cavaliers. As a result, Cleveland made drastic changes at the NBA Trade Deadline, and one of those moves was trading Thomas.

Thomas had a great season in 2016-17 with the Boston Celtics. He was fifth in the MVP voting and helped turn things around in recent seasons in Boston. He never came close to having the same impact this season because of his hip injury.

Thomas was traded to the Cavaliers in the Kyrie Irving blockbuster trade. Because of the hip problem, he was never able to truly acclimate himself to the LeBron James led team, and ended up in Los Angeles a few months later.

This is a big blow for Thomas. He believed he was setting himself up for a max contract after his performance with the Celtics last season. Thomas said that teams will have to back up a Brinks truck for him in free agency. Now, he will be lucky to get a multi-year deal at all.

Thomas’ decision to rehab and not get surgery initially is something that will be questioned by people. He could have had this procedure done last summer, and used whatever was left of the season to show he was healthy. Instead, he may have to settle for a one-year deal to show he is healthy, not the Brinks truck deal he was hoping to land.

With Thomas sidelined, Lonzo Ball will be playing as many minutes as he can handle to close out the season. The Lakers could make some moves to add players to the roster, as the front office is considering a free agent signing due to the injuries.

In addition to Thomas, the Lakers are also without Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart. It has led to Luke Walton relying heavily on the starting five. That could continue happening for the foreseeable future until they get healthier.
