Recent Los Angeles Lakers rumors involve former center Andrew Bynum, who is reportedly attempting a comeback to the league.

Some recent Los Angeles Lakers rumors have delved into plans for the team’s roster. There have been reports about how they may use their cap space next offseason.

With an open roster spot, there will probably be more Lakers rumors in the coming days and weeks about players that could fill that spot. A center could be a target for the team. Could Andrew Bynum be someone the team considers?

Bynum, who spent the first seven season of his NBA career with the Lakers, winning two NBA titles, was a key piece in the huge four-team trade that led to Dwight Howard landing with the Lakers. 12 players and at least four draft picks were traded as well.

Bynum was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers but never suited up for the team because of injury. He has not played since the 2013-14 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers. Bynum succumbed to injuries, which looked to end his career. However, he is looking to get back into the NBA.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Bynum is preparing to make a comeback to the NBA. Bynum is taking this comeback attempt seriously, as he is already setting up workouts prior to training camps getting underway later this month.

Bynum’s knees gave him problems, which was why he never suited up for the 76ers. They ultimately limited him to only 26 games with the Cavaliers and Pacers, and he hasn’t been on an NBA floor since.

While the injuries hampered him, he still provided decent production in his final NBA season. Bynum averaged 8.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 blocks despite playing only 19.8 minutes per game.

While a far cry from his 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.9 blocks per game in 2011-12, they still showed his potential on both ends of the court. That 2011-12 season was the best in Bynum’s career, as he also made his only All-Star game that season.

The knee problems will also be a concern for Bynum, but the scheduled workouts could land him a training camp invite with a team. He has looked to be in good shape in some of the videos posted of him working out. His 3-point stroke has also been on display.

Bynum had an infamous interview after being benched for shooting a 3-pointer in a game. Mike Brown, the head coach at the time, was not happy that he attempted a 3-pointer, which led to the benching and some choice words from Bynum.

At the time, stretch-5’s were not yet a thing. In today’s NBA, Bynum would be praised for working to expand his range and develop more versatility of the offensive end.

Bynum is still a long way from landing an NBA deal, but this is a nice first step. If he performs well in the workouts, it would not be surprising to see him land at least a training camp deal.

At only 30-years old, he could have some basketball left in him. Maybe the Lakers will come calling if they feel the need for another center during camp.
